The Metta Charity has been helping students get an education for many years. They have strived to create a comfortable, happy, and safe space for Burmese refugees and their children. When Covid-19 hit, it hurt everyone, but it really did strike communities like this very hard. Parents were out of work and of course many donations stopped coming in because people everywhere were concerned about their own security.
The fall out of this is that one of the school Metta Charity had opened was forced to close. This caused them to bring students from the school that closed to the one remaining school that is still open. It is full to capacity and with the new laws of social distancing, not every child will be able to get the education they need and want.
There are more students than ever but because of financial reasons, there is one less school now running. Bringing two schools to just school. They have to go to different villages and visit more houses to bring students to one school now. More vehicles are needed because of social distancing.
School is beginning but the Thai government says that social distancing must take place. This is causing a problem because the school needs more space. However, because one of the schools closed, there is very little space and the one school everyone is in is maxxed out.
Metta Charity is looking to extend their space for students. They aren’t looking to make the building bigger but just extend the roof so there’s more space under for social distancing. Home based learning is a big thing right now and teachers are having to travel quite long distances to help children maintain their education. We feel truly blessed to have so much help from everyone but know that we are always welcoming donations.
The time during Covid-19 has affected so many aspects of the Burmese refugees lives. Many weren’t able to work and they are living in the worst conditions. They are stuck behind borders and have no money for food. We are constantly going to villages with the food we have purchased from your donations. The smallest gestures make huge differences in every person’s life. We thank you and wish you a safe and happy future.
An 8 Day Old Baby Needs a Home and People are Starving
This was never a Covid-19 issue but the state of Burmese refugees near the Thai border has worsened because of it.
While most of have a lot of time on our hands, there are people who are working extra hard to feed people in need. In Canada, we are lucky. I still feel myself to be a spoiled brat in this situation. The government is giving money to Canadians that need it. Enough money that we can sustain ourselves. In places like Burma, they have always struggled. In a situation like this, it’s so much worse than you can imagine. Everything you were terrified about, that caused you stress, is someone’s reality.
At the beginning of the Corona virus outbreak, you may have thought the worst. That you would die much sooner than your time. That you would run out of food with no way to get more. That you would stop making money and the bank would take your house away. Right now, these are realities for the already poor. My friend Johny from Metta Charity just told me what’s going on with the Burmese he oversees.
Just a quick blurb so you know the backstory on this. Johny is Burmese himself but ran away to Thailand a long time ago for a better life. He is supporting his own family while helping many Burmese refugees. He has helped adults get jobs in Thailand and has built schools for their children. There are orphans that he helps too. Johny has always worked tirelessly to make lives better for his country folk.
In the times of Covid-19, things have gotten much worse. The Burmese that were once making about $10 per day are now making nothing. They were told to stop working and no money has come to them. Johny and his charity are currently feeding about 300 people per day. He is exhausted and so is his team but still they provide and they give.
Other tragedies still exist among all of this. A 14-year old girl gave birth to a baby she didn’t know she was having just over a week ago. She is not equipped to take care of this baby. The boyfriend ran off and was always drinking anyway. This baby needs to find a home because the girl can’t take care of herself. The situation is painful for all and the best outcome would be for the baby to find a loving home.
Metta Charity takes money to help refugees with food, medical, and schooling. Right now, they are feeding hundreds of refugees per day that aren’t working. They are feeding children and adults who would otherwise starve. If you can help during this time, even $5 can make a major difference. When we give to others, we can feel better about our own suffering in a way. You’ll be surprised at how it can change the way you feel right at this moment to reach out with your heart to someone seriously in need.
